#42 (EN): New York, Boston, SVC4 lining

Have a nice Sunday. Today's news is all about the US tour, but there is also an update from the engineers who stayed at home.

+++ USA TOUR +++

One of the first 16 SVC3s has arrived in the United States!

The Sono-US tour kicked off in Times Square in New York, with a booth set up on the side of the road in front of Nasdaq. The day after there were nice pictures from Brooklyn with the Manhattan skyline in the background. Whoopi Goldberg dropped by on Wednesday for a test drive (Laurin was the chauffeur and Thomas was driven by Whoopi) - in the evening there was a party, with skyscrapers in the background.

We continued from October 14th in Boston at the "High Street Food Hall". There was also a lot going on here, some influencers reported on Instagram. The house DJ "DJ J-Wall" provided the background music in the evening at the Food Hall.

The mood in the community regarding the tour was mixed. At first, the whole thing was viewed very skeptically - present the car, in a market where it is not sold at all? On the other hand, the tour is slowly gaining more and more "followers", beautiful pictures and surprise guests like Whoopi Goldberg are pleasing many.

If you want to get into a virtual party mood in front of your laptop, just open the picture of the Sion in front of the New York skyline (below) and imagine you are in New York. For the sound, you'll find a playlist by "DJ J Wall" . For the typical New York smell, just empty your household garbage into the oven, set it to 150 degrees (300 Farenheit for all you non-metric people out there) and dump the cat litter box after it. Then you have the full immersive ambiance.

+++ SNEAK PREVIEW +++

According to Sono's homepage, there will be an event in San José on October 26 - "by invitation only". We're snooping, of course.

On YouTube, we found an appointment notice: On Oct. 26 at 10:00 a.m. local time, there's an event at Sibros with Sono that will be broadcast live. Sibros is the networking partner for the Sion and is based in Silicon Valley.

Since we live nine hours in the future in Europe versus the West Coast, that's 19:00 in our area, perfect for dinner. According to the YouTube source, here's what Sono is planning:

  • 19:00 our time (10:00 PDT): Welcome.

  • 19:30: Live demo of the connected car.

  • 20:30: Guided tour of the Sion (1.5 hours) - sounds ambitious, it's not that big ;-)

This could be interesting, because here a partner shows what it delivers. Sibros even has a special page on its homepage. Maybe we can watch this together as a community. Register is not necessary, because the whole thing should also run on YouTube.

+++ TECH VIDEO +++

Developers and testers stayed home to work. Arun from Team Sono takes care of the "DCU", the "Distribution Control Unit", whose task is to control the flow of current into and out of the Sion. At minute 1:16 in the video you can see the and the cooling fins already show that real energy is being moved here. At minute 2:24, you can see the Schuko socket at the front and the bidirectional charging socket.

By the way, the "Like" and "Subscribe" buttons on YouTube are a technical feature that should not be underestimated! Click on them and never miss another episode!

+++ PROGRESS +++

The first tools and fixtures for series production (SVC4 and series) are finished and ready for use. Wheel arch linings and underbody protection could be pressed. We are still curious when the rest will come for the SVC4, the beginning is made. A few trial pressings can already be seen.

+++ EFAHRER +++

A report from German Web-Magazine EFAHRER on Sono.

"The e-car startup Sono from Germany, which had already been written off on the part of the public, is doggedly fighting its way back into the market."

In essence, the article deals with the topic of new renowned customers through solar integration via solar bus kit. Sono's division seems to have a lot of potential.

+++ FULLY CHARGED +++

Fully Charged regularly reports about the Sion: The latest video is about "charging" when you don't have your own possibility at home. Relatively far back (around min. 12), the Sion also comes as part of the solution - with vehicle-to-vehicle charging.

+++ YAHOO FINANCE +++

Yahoo (yes they still exist) also has a video on Sono and a long article.

+++ NASDAQ TALKS +++

Why now is the right time for solar mobility? Nasdaq's Jill Malandrino interviews Laurin. With (as of today, Sunday morning) 48 views, the video isn't exactly a blockbuster, but it's enough for the right people to see it.

+++ TECH CRUNCH +++

TechCrunch has written an article about the Sion in NY, the most interesting can be found at the end in the photo gallery. A unique selling point of the Sion is "the solar" on the sides. And on the last picture you can see the irradiation at the rear, 54 watts. In the previous picture, the trunk is open, so the value should be taken with a grain of salt in everyday use. But - it comes around what.

https://techcrunch.com/2022/10/14/inside-sono-motors-family-friendly-25000-solar-ev/

I know - what we actually want is the "proof of the pudding": a Sion, and a time-lapse view over the course of the day how the battery charges. The ultimate proof.

But at least the generation values are now correct and live, we’re getting there.

+++ ECOMENTO +++

Ecomento has caused confusion in the community.

Sono Motors: Over 42,000 reservations and pre-orders for the Sion

was the headline. The resolution came in the text, 20,000 paid reservations, and 22,000 business reservations (B2B), which usually don't pay until you get the car. Sono is careful with the B2B numbers because some startups in the past have only reported a combined number, massively inflating the number of pre-orders. They don't want to repeat that mistake. There is no "jump" in reservations due to the US tour, and if there is, we won't know until November 1 when the new numbers come in.

+++ FUN FACT +++

We also stay in the US with todays Fun Fact: Muhammad Ali, the visionary boxer, knew it already in 1971: someday cars will drive that are powered by the sun. Sounds crazy? We have it on video!

Starting minute 3:53 - the link jumps directly to the right moment.

"Experts say there will be cars powered by the sun".

Really incredible, looking back at this today, that was over 50 years ago, and he's talking about Solar Electric Vehicles.

Have a great week, stay healthy.
